How to File NJ Unemployment Claim Online and By Telephone

The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development is in charge of NJ unemployment claims. You can file claim either online or by telephone.

How to file NJ unemployment claim online?
NJLWD reminds you to be careful of sites that charge fees for filing unemployment insurance claims. The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development does not charge any fee to file an unemployment claim. You may file your fresh unemployment claim, or reopen an existing claim via the Internet if you meet all the following requirements:

  • All of your work was in New Jersey in the past 18 months;
  • You did not work for the federal government in the past 18 months;
  • You did not serve in the military in the past 18 months;
  • You did not work as a maritime employee in the past 18 months;
  • You do not reside outside the United States;
  • You do not want to reopen or file a claim for extended benefits.

If you meet these requirements, you can file your unemployment claim via the internet. The official online claim site is: www.njuifile.net. Please note that www.njuifile.net is used for filing a fresh unemployment claim, reopening a claim (excluding an extended benefits claim) or claiming weekly benefits. How to file NJ unemployment claim via telephone?
There are three Reemployment Call Centers in New Jersey for filing fresh unemployment claims and reopening existing claims by telephone. The Reemployment Call Centers are open 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday, and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (noon), Saturday, excluding holidays.

Due to high call volume, the Division of Unemployment Insurance has diminished the days to file or reopen a claim for benefits by the last digit of your Social Security Number (SSN). Below is the scheduled day to call depending on the last digit of your SSN:

Last digit of SSN is 0 – 3 call on Monday.
Last digit of SSN is 4 – 6 call on Tuesday.
Last digit of SSN is 7 – 9 call on Wednesday.

Note: There are no confinements on Social Security Numbers on Thursdays or Fridays.

Your claim will be dated the Sunday of the week in which you call so make sure you call during the week you want your claim to begin. Our week runs Sunday to Saturday. Call volume is most intense on Mondays, so for quicker service, call afterward in the week.
